happiness: collect moments not things.
Happiness comes from experiences, not material possessions. We are being constantly bombarded by marketing ads telling us that buying this product or that service will bring us happiness. But once you’ve handed over your hard earned cash for the newest iPhone, or latest fashion buys, the shine soon wears off and we’re left looking for the next thing that will supposedly make us happy.
It wasn’t until well into adulthood that the penny finally dropped for me. I decided to travel the world, and reduced my possessions down to what would fit in my backpack. Everything else, I gave away. It was truly liberating.
Granted, there is a high to be had when something we’ve been hankering after finally becomes ours. But how long does that buzz really last? The elation we experience is typically fleeting – and many of us are then on the lookout for the next thing that we can buy in the ongoing pursuit of happiness. Which brings us to the Spolier Alert – namely – money cannot buy us long-lasting joy. Why? Because happiness comes from within. Not from amassing a house-full of material possessions.
So, it’s time we started to collect moments, not things. The memories we create last an entire lifetime – unlike the fleeting gratification we experience from accumulating a whole heap of material possessions.
